dawned on me at the grocery store (a vent)

It dawned on me at a Kroger in Buford, Georgia, that I was really in the US. At that moment the strange vacuum or non-place of the airport-highway-suburbia took specific and familiar references. What came to my mind were memories of the last months before leaving for New Zealand. The smell and lighting of the grocery store reminded me of the Hyvees in Iowa. A euphoric time; with the exciting prospects of an upcoming move, and job, accompanied by a long-awaited loved one, I felt, for the most part, that only good things could happen. That was only six months ago, but it feels like several years ago. So much has changed and become uncertain since then.
